We at the Human Promise are a group of teenagers just like you and we're taking action to make a difference for young people in Darfur, Sudan.
We are challenging you to join us in a campaign we've co-organized with the help of Save Darfur Canada, called the Darfur Challenge.
Canadian students will compete to raise funds for Darfur causes, and will raise awareness in their schools and communities about the issues affecting young people in Darfur. Fundraising proceeds will support War Child Canada's projects on the ground, and Save Darfur Canada's advocacy work here at home.
1.4 million young people are directly affected by the Darfur crisis in Sudan, Africa, a devastating conflict beginning its 5th year in April 2008. Because of the resulting violence and instability, more than half of all children cannot attend school, and there are few other opportunities available to them. They are also at high risk for severe malnutrition, violence and being recruited into armed groups.
Groups like War Child Canada provide essential programming and resources that these kids could not otherwise obtain. Organizations like Save Darfur Canada direct public focus to what Canada and other governments must do to help bring an end to the crisis.
Between March 17th and May 21st, students across the country will host events and develop fundraising initiatives. A variety of resources are available to participants on the www.DarfurChallenge.org website, including campaign and learning materials. Many of the same resources are in this kit as well.
While raising money, participants will also increase awareness about the Darfur crisis in their schools and communities using a variety of resources, including campaign and learning materials on the www.DarfurChallenge.org website.
At the end of the competition, top fundraisers win exciting prizes. However, more importantly, Canadian students will have made a difference to the day-to-day lives of Darfuri youth by sponsoring essential programming for them, and by contributing to work in Canada to help bring the violence in Darfur to an end,
Young people in Darfur face terrible realities, but Canadian students can help.
